Go On Girl

Go On Girl

De La Soul · 1988
Recording

The track was cut in 1988 for the Colors soundtrack, with Marley Marl credited as producer. It appeared on the U.S. single from Cold Chillin'/Warner Bros. and on the UK Breakout Records pressing. Released during the late-1980s wave of New York rap soundtrack records, it tied Roxanne Shanté to the Colors project and put her on a widely distributed commercial single. The song reached No. 55 on the UK Official Singles Chart and spent three weeks there. The track has remained part of Shanté’s catalog through later soundtrack and discography listings, and it has been sampled by later artists. Its Marley Marl production and association with Colors keep it a reference point for late-1980s East Coast rap.
