King of the Beats
Mantronix · 1988Recorded in Mantronix’s 1988 Capitol Records period for In Full Effect, with Kurtis Mantronik as the sole credited producer. The track was issued on the US 12-inch single for “Join Me Please... (Home Boys—Make Some Noise).” “King of the Beats” became a showcase for Mantronik’s sample-heavy drum programming and breakbeat construction, and it was recognized early as one of the first tracks to sample the Amen break. Contemporary coverage of Mantronix’s move to Capitol framed the group as a major force in hip-hop production. The track’s breakbeat collage later made it a heavily sampled source and a touchstone for drum-and-bass, jungle, and breakbeat DJs and producers; one database credits it with sampling in more than 400 later songs. Its reputation as a pioneering Amen-break record has kept it central to discussions of hip-hop production history.
