Womack & Womack · 1988
Recording

Recorded for Conscience at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, with Chris Blackwell producing. The single was issued in 1988 on Island/Fourth and Broadway and built around Cecil Womack and Linda Womack’s songwriting. It became Womack & Womack’s breakthrough hit, reaching No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and spending 18 weeks on the chart. It helped turn Conscience into their best-known album and made the duo a major late-1980s UK crossover act. The song has endured as a standard of late-1980s pop-soul and has been widely covered, including versions by k.d. lang, Elton John, Joss Stone, The xx, Lovestation, and others. Its continued presence in cover catalogs and compilations has kept it circulating well beyond its original chart run.
