Go On Girl

Roxanne Shanté · 1988
Recording

Recorded for the Colors soundtrack in 1988 as a Marley Marl-produced and mixed single by Roxanne Shanté, with writing credited to Antonio Hardy and Marlon Williams. It was issued in the UK on Breakout and in the US on Cold Chillin'/Warner Bros. The track became one of Shanté’s defining late-1980s releases and a standout from the Colors soundtrack. It reached number 55 on the UK singles chart and gave her a wider commercial profile beyond her earlier battle-record fame. 'Go On Girl' remains one of Shanté’s best-known songs and has continued to circulate in hip-hop retrospectives and later sample culture. The record has been sampled by later artists and has also been used in contemporary dance programming.
