I Wish
Skee‐Lo · 1995Recording
Recorded at Sunshine Studios in Hollywood, California for Skee-Lo's debut album I Wish. Skee-Lo wrote and performed the track, with Walter Kahn and Skee-Lo handling production. Released in April 1995 as the lead single from I Wish, it became Skee-Lo's breakthrough hit and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single earned gold certification in the United States and a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. It remains Skee-Lo's signature record and one of the most recognizable self-deprecating rap singles of the mid-1990s. Its basketball fantasies, comic underdog tone, and Bernard Wright sample have kept it prominent in 1990s pop-rap retrospectives.
