Buffalo Springfield · —
Recording

The track was recorded in Los Angeles in December 1966 by Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin. Charles Greene and Brian Stone produced the recording, which was added to later pressings of Buffalo Springfield after becoming a hit single. Released as a single in 1966, it became Buffalo Springfield biggest hit and a defining protest-era record after Stills wrote it in response to the Sunset Strip curfew disturbances. The single reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. It remains Buffalo Springfield signature song and one of the most recognizable American protest recordings of the 1960s. The track has been widely licensed, covered and sampled, keeping its tense guitar figure and warning lyric in political and cultural memory.
