Midnight Lover

Midnight Lover

Side Effect · 1981
Recording

It was recorded in 1981 at Total Experience Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, during the Portraits sessions. Miki Howard is credited as the songwriter, and the track was cut by Side Effect for the album that followed After the Rain. It appeared on Portraits, the group's second Elektra album, and stood out as one of the record's smoother studio-soul numbers. The song also highlighted Miki Howard's role within Side Effect's 1981 lineup. It has remained one of the most revisited cuts from Portraits and has been sampled in multiple later tracks. That continued use has kept the song present in hip-hop and contemporary sample culture.
