Just Knee Deep
Funkadelic · 1979Recorded at United Sound Studios in Detroit for Funkadelic’s 1979 album Uncle Jam Wants You, with George Clinton guiding the session and Walter "Junie" Morrison handling the arrangement; the single version also featured Philippé Wynne alongside the P-Funk core. Released in 1979 on Warner Bros. as the album’s major crossover single, the edited version of "(Not Just) Knee Deep" reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Soul singles chart and peaked at No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100. Contemporary reviews singled it out as standout black pop and dance music. It became one of Funkadelic’s most sampled recordings, feeding later hits by De La Soul and Digital Underground and helping define the sound later associated with G-funk and sample-based hip-hop production. Its groove remains a touchstone in funk and rap.
