Cosmic Slop
Funkadelic · 1973Recorded during 1972–1973 for Funkadelic's fifth studio album, Cosmic Slop, at United Sound Studios in Detroit and Manta Sound in Toronto. Produced by George Clinton and written by Clinton and Bernie Worrell, the recording features Garry Shider on guitar and vocals, Worrell on keyboards, Cordell Mosson on bass and Tyrone Lampkin on percussion, with engineering credited to Lee DeCarlo and Jerry Estes. Released in 1973, Cosmic Slop combined a driving, hypnotic groove with a socially conscious narrative about a mother struggling to support her children through prostitution. Although the single did not chart nationally, its emotionally charged performance and innovative production established it as one of Funkadelic's defining recordings. Cosmic Slop became an enduring cornerstone of the Parliament-Funkadelic catalogue, celebrated for its distinctive guitar work, layered vocals and emotionally complex storytelling. Its influence extends through subsequent generations of funk, hip-hop and alternative rock, while its continued presence in Parliament-Funkadelic live performances has reinforced its status as a signature composition.
