Get Up
Vernon Burch · 1979Recorded in 1979 at Magic Wand Studios in Burbank, California, 'Get Up' featured Vernon Burch on lead vocals and guitar, James Gadson on drums, David Shields on bass, Mike Thompson on keyboards and The Waters on backing vocals. Written by Burch and Howard Redmon Jr., the recording was produced by Gadson and co-produced by Burch, with horn arrangements by Tony Coleman, Gadson and Burch and engineering by Robert Incorvia and Tyrone Williams. Released in 1979 on Chocolate City Records, 'Get Up' was the title track of Burch's fifth studio album and reflected his shift towards extended, dance-oriented arrangements following his departure from the Bar-Kays. Its driving bassline, prominent percussion, rhythm guitar and energetic vocal delivery helped the single reach number 35 on Billboard's R&B chart. The recording became an enduring favourite among DJs, dancers and collectors, particularly through its prominent bassline, rhythmic arrangement and extended instrumental passages. Its lasting influence was reinforced when Deee-Lite sampled the track for their 1990 international hit 'Groove Is in the Heart', introducing Burch's recording to a new generation of listeners.
