Groove Is in the Heart

Deee‐Lite · 1990
Recording

Recorded in 1990 in New York City for Deee-Lite’s debut album, World Clique. The session featured Deee-Lite as producer and arranger, with engineering by Mike Rogers and additional work by Bob Power, Derek Lategan, and Eddie Sancho. Released as Deee-Lite’s debut single, it broke through from club rotation to mainstream pop, reaching the upper tier of the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a defining crossover dance record of 1990. Its mix of house, funk, rap, and psychedelic pop made it one of the era’s most recognizable singles. The track remains Deee-Lite’s signature song and a staple of 1990s dance-pop playlists. Its sample-driven production, guest vocals, and bright club energy have kept it widely referenced in compilations, retrospectives, and dance-music canon lists.
