Released in 1991 on A&M Records, the single became Peniston's debut hit and reached number one on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart before crossing to number five on the Billboard Hot 100. It established Peniston as one of the defining new dance-pop voices of the early 1990s. The track became Peniston's signature record and has remained a standard of 1990s club and pop culture. It has been ranked by major music publications among the best dance and pop songs of its era.
