Everybody in the Place
The Prodigy · 1991Produced by Liam Howlett and Chaz Stevens at C.W.S. Studios, the track originated as the original version on the What Evil Lurks EP in February 1991 before being remixed and released as a single in December 1991. Howlett recorded the production on a Roland W-30 sampling keyboard, incorporating samples from MC Duke & Merlin's 'Freestyle Part 2' and other breakbeat sources. Released as The Prodigy's second official single in December 1991 on XL Recordings, the track became a landmark breakbeat hardcore anthem that peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, held from the top only by Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' re-release following Freddie Mercury's death. The release cemented The Prodigy's status as leading architects of the emerging UK hardcore rave scene. Everybody in the Place remains a foundational 1991 breakbeat hardcore record, ranked number 88 by DJ Magazine in their Top 100 Club Tunes and number 31 by Classic Pop in their top 40 dance tracks from the 90s. Its influence extends across drum and bass, jungle, and breakbeat production worldwide, and it continues to define the sonic and cultural aesthetic of early-1990s UK rave.
