Some Justice
Urban Shakedown · 1991Produced by Mickey Finn, Aphrodite, and Claudio Giussani in 1991, the track was constructed on two synchronized Amigas using an unconventional click-based method to achieve multi-track recording. The production came together when Aphrodite played a demo to Mickey Finn and Claudio Giussani at City Sounds record shop in London, leading to their collaboration and the addition of samples from Ce Ce Rogers and Run-DMC. Released in 1991 on the newly formed Urban Shakedown label (MCG-001), the track became an iconic breakbeat hardcore anthem that bridged early rave and the emerging jungle sound. Featured heavily on Colin Faver's Kiss FM show, it exemplified the late-1991 moment when UK hardcore was assimilating hip-hop breakbeats and building the sonic template for drum and bass. Charted at UK #23 in September 1992 with sustained club and pirate radio play. Some Justice remains a canonical early-1990s breakbeat hardcore record that documented the pivotal transition from rave to jungle. The track's minimal but intricate production using consumer-level equipment influenced countless drum and bass producers. Its samples and production aesthetics have been referenced in over ten subsequent productions, and it continues to be recognized as a foundational text in UK breakbeat culture and a defining moment in the genre's evolution.
