Man's Best Friend / Loopzilla

George Clinton · 1982
Recording

"Man's Best Friend / Loopzilla" was recorded during the 1981–1982 sessions for George Clinton's first solo album, Computer Games, at The Disc Ltd. in East Detroit and United Sound Systems in Detroit. Clinton produced the recording with Garry Shider, drawing on a large cast of former Parliament-Funkadelic musicians including Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Junie Morrison and Dennis Chambers. "Loopzilla" was the first major single from Computer Games and reached number 19 on Billboard's R&B chart and number 48 on the dance chart. Its extended construction wove references to earlier P-Funk, Motown and Zapp recordings into a new studio collage as Clinton established his post-Parliament/Funkadelic solo career. The recording became one of the key tracks from Clinton's early solo period and anticipated the quotation-heavy production practices that became central to later hip-hop. "Loopzilla" was itself subsequently sampled by artists including Ice Cube and Ruthless Rap Assassins.
