Atomic Dog (Special Atomic Mix)

Atomic Dog (Special Atomic Mix)

George Clinton · 1982
Recording

The underlying recording was created in January 1982 at United Sound Studios in Detroit, with David Spradley building the backing track and George Clinton improvising vocals alongside Garry Shider. The Special Atomic Mix extended the recording to approximately ten minutes for Capitol's twelve-inch release. The extended mix accompanied Clinton's emergence as a solo recording artist following Parliament-Funkadelic's commercial peak. Atomic Dog reached number one on Billboard's R&B singles chart in 1983, establishing the signature song of his solo career. Atomic Dog became a foundational source for later sampling, notably on Snoop Doggy Dogg's Who Am I (What's My Name?). The Special Atomic Mix preserved its extended presentation and was subsequently included on Extended Pleasure in 2000.
