R.E.M. · 1998Recording
The track was recorded for Up with Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills after Bill Berry departure from R.E.M. The album sessions took place at studios including Toast in San Francisco, John Keane Studio in Athens and Criteria in Miami, with Pat McCarthy and R.E.M. producing. Released as the lead single from Up in 1998, it introduced R.E.M. first album as a trio and marked a more atmospheric direction for the band. The single reached number 6 on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the album main radio tracks. It remains one of the defining songs from R.E.M. late 1990s transition period. The track is closely associated with the band post Bill Berry reinvention and Michael Stipe lyrical focus on modern working life and dislocation.
