Art For Art's Sake

Art For Art's Sake

10cc · 1975
Recording

Recorded in 1975 at Strawberry Studios in Stockport for How Dare You!, the song was written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman and produced by 10cc. Stewart sang lead, with Lol Creme contributing a second lead vocal and Kevin Godley playing drums. The single followed “I'm Not in Love” and sustained the band's commercial success, reaching number five in Britain. Its satire of money and artistic ambition drew praise from Record World for its vocal production and memorable hook. The song remains a regular feature of 10cc's concerts and greatest-hits collections. Its critique of commercial priorities in music has continued to resonate in retrospective reviews.
