Sultans of Swing

Dire Straits · 1978
Recording

The track was first recorded as a demo at Pathway Studios in 1977 and later re recorded for Dire Straits debut album. The album version was recorded at Basing Street Studios in London with Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers, produced by Muff Winwood. Released as the band debut single in 1978, it became the record that broke Dire Straits internationally. The single reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains Dire Straits signature early recording and one of Mark Knopfler best known guitar performances. The song has remained a classic rock radio staple and a defining example of the band clean, understated sound.
