Romeo And Juliette
Dire Straits · 1981The track was recorded for Making Movies at the Power Station in New York with Mark Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers, after David Knopfler left Dire Straits during the album sessions. Jimmy Iovine produced the recording with Mark Knopfler, with Roy Bittan of the E Street Band contributing piano and keyboards. Released on Making Movies in 1980 and as a single in 1981, it became one of Dire Straits major early ballads. The single reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and helped broaden the band reputation beyond the blues rock identity of Sultans of Swing. It remains one of Mark Knopfler most admired narrative songs and a central Dire Straits catalogue recording. The track has endured through later live versions, compilation releases and notable covers by artists including the Killers and Indigo Girls.
