Depth Charge
Depth Charge · 1989The track was recorded by J. Saul Kane under the Depth Charge name and issued on Vinyl Solution in 1989. The original release also credited Alan Scott for engineering and mixing, with mastering and lacquers by John Dent at The Exchange. The track belonged to Kane’s early run of hard breakbeat releases and reflected his reaction against the faster club tempos circulating in London at the time. Contemporary and retrospective coverage describes it as a singular 1989 record built from kung fu dialogue, sonar-like effects, and heavy dub bass. It remained a touchstone for later breakbeat and big beat listeners because of its sample collage approach and its pre-Wu-Tang kung fu aesthetic. Later writing has continued to cite it as one of Kane’s defining records and as a key early statement of his influence on UK electronic music.
