Hello It's Me
Todd Rundgren · 1971Recorded in late 1971 at the Record Plant in New York for Something/Anything?, the performance was captured live in the studio with no overdubbing or editing. Todd Rundgren sang and played piano alongside Mark Klingman, John Siomos, Stu Woods, Robbie Kogale, the Brecker brothers, Barry Rogers and a group of backing vocalists. Rundgren transformed the slow ballad first recorded by Nazz into a warmer, mid-tempo ensemble performance. Reissued as a single in 1973, it became his largest solo hit and reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The song remains Rundgren's signature recording and one of the defining pop singles of the early 1970s. Its later covers, samples and prominent television appearances have sustained its cultural recognition.
