John Lennon · 1970Recording
Written, recorded and mixed on 27 January 1970 at Studio Three, EMI Studios in London. Phil Spector produced John Lennon with George Harrison, Klaus Voormann, Billy Preston, Alan White, Yoko Ono and additional backing vocalists. Released only ten days after it was recorded, the single became one of the fastest major releases in pop history. It reached number five in the United Kingdom and number three in the United States, becoming the first million-selling solo single by a Beatle. The recording remains one of Lennon's defining solo singles and an early example of Phil Spector's work with former Beatles. Its refrain later inspired the title of Stephen King's novel The Shining and the song has been widely covered.
