John Lennon · 1971Recording
The track was recorded in 1971 at Ascot Sound Studios, John Lennon home studio at Tittenhurst Park, with later orchestral overdubs at the Record Plant in New York. Lennon, Yoko Ono and Phil Spector produced the recording with musicians including Klaus Voormann, Alan White and the Flux Fiddlers. Released on Imagine in 1971 and as a single the same year, it became Lennon most famous solo recording. The single reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart after Lennon death. It remains Lennon signature solo song and one of the most widely recognized peace anthems in popular music. The recording has been covered and performed at major public events and became central to Lennon cultural legacy.
