Home Is Where the Hatred Is
Esther Phillips · 1971Recording
Recorded in December 1971 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, for From a Whisper to a Scream. Creed Taylor produced the session, with Pee Wee Ellis arranging and conducting the backing ensemble. It opened Esther Phillips’s first Kudu album and became one of her best-known 1970s recordings. The performance earned a Grammy nomination and helped define her move into the Kudu/CTI soul-jazz sound. The song remained one of Phillips’s signature recordings and the track most closely associated with From a Whisper to a Scream. It is widely cited as a key Gil Scott-Heron interpretation in her catalog and a high point of her Kudu years.
