Watching the Wheels

John Lennon · 1980
Recording

The track was recorded in 1980 at the Hit Factory in New York during the Double Fantasy sessions with John Lennon returning to the studio after a five year recording break. Lennon recorded it with producer Jack Douglas and the album session band, with Yoko Ono co-producing the project. Released on Double Fantasy in 1980 and as a single in 1981, it became one of Lennon major posthumous hits. The single reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and framed Lennon public explanation of his years away from the music business. It remains one of Lennon signature solo recordings from his final period and one of the central songs associated with Double Fantasy. The track has endured as a reflective statement on retreat, domestic life and creative return before his death.
