The track was recorded for Histoire de Melody Nelson with Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin and arranger Jean Claude Vannier. The album was recorded in London with rhythm section musicians including Herbie Flowers, Dougie Wright and Vic Flick, with Jean Claude Desmarty producing. Released on Histoire de Melody Nelson in 1971, it opened the concept album that became one of Gainsbourg most acclaimed works. The record had limited commercial impact at release but later became central to his reputation outside France.
