I Saw the Light

I Saw the Light

Todd Rundgren · 1972
Recording

Rundgren recorded the song in late 1971 at I.D. Sound in Los Angeles for Something/Anything?, playing every instrument and singing all the vocals. He wrote, arranged and produced the recording himself. As the album's opening track and lead single, it demonstrated Rundgren's ability to create a hit recording single-handedly. It reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, strengthening his commercial standing as a solo artist. The song remains one of Rundgren's signature recordings, with later versions by Terry Hall, Hal Ketchum and Yo La Tengo. Its enduring appeal also brought it into the ensemble performances in A Very Murray Christmas.
