The Hop
A Tribe Called Quest · 1990Recording
Recorded in late 1989 and early 1990 during the sessions for A Tribe Called Quest’s debut album at Calliope Studios and Battery Studios in New York City. The track was cut by the group’s core team of Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. It appeared on the group’s debut album, a release that was praised for its fresh, playful approach and helped define the Native Tongues era. “The Hop” sits within that early statement of style, balancing offbeat humor with the group’s laid-back production. The track remains part of the first album that established A Tribe Called Quest as one of hip hop’s most influential groups. Its sound and attitude helped set a template for later alternative and jazz-informed rap.
