Custard Pie
Led Zeppelin · 1975Recording
The track was recorded for Physical Graffiti with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. The recording came from the band 1974 album sessions at Headley Grange with Ronnie Lane Mobile Studio, with Page producing. Released on Physical Graffiti in 1975, it opened the album with a riff driven performance that connected Led Zeppelin late period sound to earlier blues sources. Though not issued as a charting single, it helped define the double album heavy opening sequence. It remains a notable Physical Graffiti track and a frequent example of Led Zeppelin adapting pre war blues imagery into hard rock. The song has drawn attention for its lyrical debts to recordings by Blind Boy Fuller, Bukka White and Sleepy John Estes.
