In My Time of Dying
Led Zeppelin · 1975Led Zeppelin recorded “In My Time of Dying” at Headley Grange in Hampshire in January–February 1974 during the Physical Graffiti sessions, using Ronnie Lane’s Mobile Studio. The track was cut largely live, with Jimmy Page adding slide-guitar overdubs, John Bonham shaping the stop-start arrangement, and Jimmy Page producing with Ron Nevison engineering. Released by Swan Song in 1975 on Physical Graffiti, the recording transformed a traditional gospel-blues song into one of Led Zeppelin’s longest and heaviest studio performances. Its extended live-band structure and unedited studio breakdown at the end underlined the album’s scale and the group’s confidence at their mid-1970s peak. The track remains a major Physical Graffiti deep cut and a showcase for Jimmy Page’s slide guitar, Robert Plant’s blues vocal style and John Bonham’s dynamic control. Later remasters restored its place within the album’s classic double-LP sequencing while preserving the studio banter that became part of its character.
