Recording

Goldfrapp recorded “Strict Machine” for Black Cherry, the duo’s second album, with Alison Goldfrapp, Will Gregory and Nick Batt credited as writers. Goldfrapp produced the track, building it around a harder electronic pulse and a lyric inspired by experiments on pleasure and control. Released by Mute in 2003 as a single from Black Cherry, it became one of Goldfrapp’s breakthrough club-pop records and reached number 25 on the UK Official Singles Chart. Its success, Ivor Novello dance-song award and later 2004 reissue helped establish the duo’s shift from Felt Mountain’s cinematic textures toward a more direct, glam-electronic sound. The track remains one of Goldfrapp’s signature singles and a defining song from their Black Cherry era. Its influence carried into mid-2000s British electro-pop and it has remained prominent through later compilations, critical lists, remixes and cover versions.
