Paper Bag

Goldfrapp · 2000
Recording

Recorded in 1999 and 2000 during the Felt Mountain sessions, mainly at a home studio in rural Wiltshire. Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory produced the track, with Adrian Utley, John Parish, Alexander Balanescu, Sonia Slany, Nick Barr, Nick Cooper, Mary Scully, Andy Davis, and the Mute Male Voices among the credited musicians. Released by Mute in 2000 on Goldfrapp's debut album Felt Mountain, Paper Bag helped define the duo's first sound around cinematic arrangement, torch-song vocals, and electronic texture. The album was critically praised and later shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Paper Bag remains a key album track from Goldfrapp's debut period and a compact example of the duo's early orchestral-electronic style. Its place on Felt Mountain ties it to one of the defining British electronic albums of the early 2000s.
