The Phantom
Renegade Soundwave · 1989Created in 1989 while Renegade Soundwave were working on their debut album Soundclash at Mute’s Harrow Road studio in London. Danny Briottet built the beat and bassline late one night while Flood worked with the rest of the band. The track arrived as acid house was hardening into UK hardcore and became an early breakbeat classic on the club and pirate-radio circuit. Contemporary and later coverage credited it with helping define the gritty rave sound and influencing artists including The Prodigy. Its breakbeat construction, sparse vocals, and Clash sample kept it in circulation as a touchstone of early UK rave and dance-punk crossover. Later retrospectives continued to cite it as a formative record for breakbeat hardcore and a durable dancefloor staple.
