Nightmares on Wax recorded I'm For Real for the 1990 Warp Records single Aftermath / I'm For Real. The original release was written by George Evelyn and Kevin Harper, produced by Nightmares on Wax, and programmed and engineered by Andy Jones. The track appeared on Warp's sixth single during the label's formative Sheffield period. Paired with Aftermath, it reached number 38 on the UK Official Singles Chart and helped establish Nightmares on Wax as one of Warp's early club acts. I'm For Real remained in Warp's catalogue through later Nightmares on Wax reissues and anniversary selections. Its inclusion on Warp retrospective material preserved it as part of the label's early dance-floor identity.
