The track was recorded at Right Tracks Studio in Cleveland, Ohio, for LeVert's 1990 album Rope a Dope Style. Gerald Levert and Marc Gordon handled the production, keeping the group’s core Cleveland lineup at the center of the session. Released as the title single from Rope a Dope Style, it helped push the album into LeVert’s run of top-tier R&B releases. Rhino later noted that the song reached No. 7 on Billboard’s R&B chart, part of an album that also generated other major R&B hits. The track remains one of LeVert’s signature early-1990s singles and is still identified with the group’s move toward a more rap-adjacent, contemporary R&B sound. Its chart success helped cement Rope a Dope Style as a gold-era LeVert album.
