Recording

The track was cut for the House Party soundtrack and mixed and recorded at Soundworks Studios in New York. Frederick Lee Drakeford, Larry Singletary, Wesley Adams, and Larry McCain handled the vocal performance, with Gene Griffin and Timmy Regisford among the credited production team. Released in 1990, it gave Today a major R&B crossover moment and tied the group to the House Party film soundtrack. The single peaked at number 2 on Billboard’s Hot Black Singles chart and spent 19 weeks there. It remained the group’s signature track and a staple of New Jack Swing retrospectives and playlists. The song is still cited as one of Today’s defining recordings and continues to be revisited through sampling and soundtrack-era compilations.
