Jade — Joi Marshall, Tonya Kelly, and Di Reed — recorded 'Don't Walk Away' at Oasis Recording Studios in Canoga Park, California, with Vassal Benford and Ronald Spearman producing and engineering, with Victor Flores handling recording and mixing duties. Released in November 1992 on Giant Records as the second single from Jade to the Max, 'Don't Walk Away' reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the R&B chart, becoming one of the most commercially successful singles of the New Jack Swing era and earning the group appearances on The Tonight Show, The Arsenio Hall Show, and Top of the Pops. Billboard ranked 'Don't Walk Away' at number 52 on their 2017 list of the 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time, and the track is consistently cited alongside En Vogue's work as a defining example of the harmony-led female R&B sound of the early 1990s.
