The Bouncer
Kicks Like a Mule · 1992Recording
Richard Russell and Nick Halkes assembled the track while working at XL Recordings, and the record was put together in about five hours. It was released by the duo Kicks Like a Mule on Tribal Bass in 1992. The Bouncer became a UK top 10 crossover from the 1992 rave scene, peaking at number 7 on the Official Singles Chart. Its blunt club-culture chant and breakbeat energy made it one of the period’s defining rave hits. The track endured as a rave anthem and was later covered by Klaxons; it was also sampled in later electronic and hip-hop records. Its chant and hook have kept it in circulation well beyond its original chart run.
