Phuture developed Acid Tracks in Chicago after DJ Pierre, Earl Spanky Smith Jr., and Herbert Herb J Jackson began experimenting with a Roland TB-303 bass machine in 1985. The finished 12-inch was produced and mixed by Marshall Jefferson and released by Trax Records in 1987. The record introduced the squelching TB-303 sound that became the foundation of acid house. Ron Hardy's Music Box plays helped turn the track from a local experiment into a defining Chicago club record. Acid Tracks remains widely cited as the first acid house record and one of the most influential electronic dance singles of the 1980s. Its TB-303 sound shaped later house, techno, rave, and electronic club production worldwide.
