Coming Up
Paul McCartney · 1980"Coming Up" was recorded in June and July 1979 at Paul McCartney's home studio in Peasmarsh and Spirit of Ranachan Studio in Campbeltown, then mixed at EMI Studios, Abbey Road. McCartney produced and engineered the recording and performed every instrument and vocal, with Eddie Klein assisting the mix. Released as the lead single from McCartney II in April 1980, the studio recording reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. In North America, its live Glasgow B-side received greater radio exposure and reached number one in the United States. The song became one of the defining recordings of McCartney's experimental solo period, accompanied by a celebrated video in which he portrayed every member of the fictional Plastic Macs. John Lennon publicly praised the studio recording, and McCartney later recalled reports that hearing it helped spur Lennon back into recording.
