Hook and Sling, Part 1

Hook and Sling, Part 1

Eddie Bo · 1969
Recording

Recorded in New Orleans by pianist, arranger and bandleader Eddie Bo with a local studio ensemble during the city's formative funk period. The session emphasized syncopated rhythms, punchy horns and Bo's distinctive piano style, creating one of the defining records of his career. Released in 1969 on Bo's own Scram label, the track became a regional hit and helped establish the blueprint for New Orleans funk. Its infectious groove and dance-oriented structure made it a favorite on local radio and in clubs. The recording achieved lasting recognition through the rare-groove movement and extensive use by hip-hop producers. Its drum breaks, horn figures and vocal interjections have made it one of the most sampled and celebrated recordings in the New Orleans funk canon.
