Do It Baby

Five Special · 1979
Recording

"Do It Baby" was recorded for Five Special's 1979 self-titled debut album, produced by Ron Banks for Baby Dump Productions. The album sessions were recorded in Detroit and Los Angeles and paired the group's vocal harmonies with an extended dance-oriented rhythm section. The track was singled out in contemporary reviews for its multi-octave group vocals, percussion-heavy rhythm and funk-driven dancefloor arrangement. Elektra issued it as a single in December 1979 after the group's earlier R&B success with "Why Leave Us Alone." "Do It Baby" became one of the enduring dance cuts from Five Special's debut and has remained associated with the late-1970s disco and boogie collector scene. It was restored to wider circulation through later reissues of the album, including the expanded 2016 edition.
