Recording

Black Ivory recorded Mainline for the 1979 Buddah album Hangin' Heavy. Leroy Burgess wrote the song, Black Ivory produced it, Michael Gomes mixed the 12-inch single at The Hit Factory, and Tom Coyne mastered the release at Frankford/Wayne. Mainline was issued as a Buddah single in 1979 and became Black Ivory's late-period club entry. It reached number 57 on Billboard's U.S. dance chart during the group's move from early-1970s harmony soul into uptempo dance material. Mainline remained a cult dance-floor title through later reissues of Hangin' Heavy and collector demand for the Buddah 12-inch. The record is closely associated with Leroy Burgess's transition into the post-disco and New York dance-music network.
