Upside Down
Diana Ross · 1980Recording
Recorded at the Power Station in New York City for Diana Ross’s Diana sessions, the track was built with Chic members Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards and featured Ross’s lead vocal over their production. Released in 1980 as the lead single from Diana on Motown, it became Ross’s biggest U.S. hit of the period and spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It marked a sharp return to the top after several quieter years and helped define the album’s Chic-driven direction. It remains one of Diana Ross’s signature recordings and was later revived by a 2018 remix that reached No. 1 on Billboard’s dance chart. Its Chic-era groove has kept it in circulation through remixes, compilations, and continued pop-cultural use.
