Love Hangover
Diana Ross · 1976Recorded in 1975 under producer Hal Davis, with the basic track cut at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles and Diana Ross' vocal recorded in a late-night session designed to fit the song's disco feel. The session used a core Motown/L.A. band including Joe Sample, Art Wright, Henry Davis, and James Gadson. Released in 1976 as Ross' first major disco single, it was issued after the 5th Dimension's competing cover pushed Motown to rush out her version. The song became a defining hit for Ross, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helping establish her as a disco-era solo star. The track remains one of Ross' signature recordings and has been widely sampled and covered, including Monica's 1998 hit "The First Night," which built on its opening passage. Its extended club-friendly structure also helped secure it a lasting place in disco history.
