Legalize It
Peter Tosh · 1976Peter Tosh recorded Legalize It in 1975–1976 at Treasure Isle and Randy's in Kingston with musicians including Al Anderson, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Robbie Shakespeare, Carlton Davis, Tyrone Downie, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Bunny Wailer. The Jamaican single was issued on Tosh's Intel Diplo label before the song became the title track of his 1976 debut solo album. The song was a direct cannabis-legalization anthem and was banned in Jamaica after release, which amplified its notoriety and helped establish Tosh's post-Wailers solo identity. It became the defining statement of his debut album and one of the era's most explicit reggae protest records. Legalize It remains one of Peter Tosh's signature songs and a lasting international anthem for cannabis-law reform. Its title and chorus became inseparable from Tosh's public image as a militant advocate for Rastafari, personal freedom, and social justice.
