The Brothers Johnson recorded Stomp! during the Light Up the Night sessions at Allen Zentz Recording, A&M Recording Studios, and Kendun Recorders in California. Quincy Jones produced the track, with George Johnson, Louis Johnson, Greg Phillinganes, Steve Porcaro, Rod Temperton, Paulinho da Costa, and John Robinson among the core players. Stomp! was released by A&M in 1980 and became the duo's biggest early-1980s crossover hit. It reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 1 on Billboard's R&B and dance charts, and number 6 on the UK singles chart. Stomp! remains one of The Brothers Johnson's signature records and a defining Quincy Jones production from the turn of the 1980s. Its bass-driven groove, group chant, and dance-floor arrangement kept it active in funk compilations, club sets, and later covers.
