T.S.O.B,
Master Jay and Michael Dee · 1980Recorded and mixed at The Platinum Factory in New York, with engineering by D. T. McLaurin, mixing by Lyndsay Johnson, and production credited to T.S.O.B. Productions. The original 12-inch was issued on TS 1000 by The Sound of Brooklyn (TSOB), with Jimmy Ross credited as songwriter. Issued in 1980, the track stood out as a Brooklyn disco-rap hybrid from the early pre-hip-hop era, and Numero Group later described it as a “raw slice of discofied rap.” Its underground reputation was strong enough that the reissue campaign framed it as a lost New York classic that had already circulated as a bootleg favorite. The record has remained collectible because of its break-heavy groove and its connection to later sampling culture; WhoSampled lists it as containing a sample of Shirley Ellis’s “The Clapping Song,” and as being sampled by Jomanda and Brother of Soul. It also resurfaced through Numero Group’s reissue and later digital listings, keeping it in circulation among DJs and diggers.
