Groove On

Willie “Beaver” Hale · 1980
Recording

It was recorded for Willie Hale’s 1980 Beaver Fever sessions in Hialeah, Florida, with Hale acting as producer. The album credits also name engineers Marsha Radcliffe and Freddy Stonewall, with backing from Robert Ferguson, George “Chocolate” Perry, Mike Lewis, Latimore, Bobby Caldwell, and the Roman Twins. The track appeared on Hale’s final-era solo album and reflected his shift into a smoother Miami funk sound under the Little Beaver alias. It was singled out as a club-oriented cut and later became one of the album’s most remembered tracks. Groove On gained a second life through later sampling, including Freeway’s 2008 track “Street Music.” It remains a staple in rare-groove and disco-funk compilations and reissues, keeping Hale’s 1980 catalog in circulation.
